Varanasi, Aug 2 (IBNS) : Taking on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his own turf, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday launched her party's campaign for the 2017 UP Assembly elections in Varanasi as she led a massive road show.

Gandhi, who arrived in Varanasi to a rousing reception by party supporters, was  led by few thousand bikers.

She is accompanied by senior leaders, including the party's Chief Ministerial candidate Sheila Dikshit,  AICC General Secretary Gulam Nabi Azad and UPCC Chief Raj Babbar.

Party workers waved flags and shouted slogans to greet their leaders.

After a series of electoral reverses in several states, the Congress has now pulled up its socks to go whole hog for Uttar Pradesh, the state once it lorded over.

Sonia Gandhi is expected to launch a virulent attack on Narendra Modi taking up the issue of development, which it alleges, has been eluding this VIP constituency.
