Sikkim and Kalimpong cut off from rest the country, tourists stranded

Siliguri, Sept 13 (IBNS) : The Himalayan state of  Sikkim and West Bengal's Kalimpong district have been cut off by land from the rest of the country after a sizeable potion of NH 10, its lifeline, was washed away following downpour for past few days.

Sikkim and Kalimpong have no other alternative link like air and rail except NH 10. The damage to the metal road that makes the state inaccessible has taken place near the 29th Mile ( Gailkhola) in Kalimpong.

As a result, tourist vehicles  and essentials cargo have remained  stranded on either section of  the breached road.

The nearest rail link is at New Jalpaiguri, about 90 kms from Gangtok 80 kms. The cut off was noticed around 11 45 hours.

Road menders have been deployed to restore the link or erect a temporary bridge on the gap portion to allow essential cargo loads and evacuation of the  stranded tourists.

The reports of landslides also came from various parts of Sikkim following rains for the past few days affecting traffic across the landlocked state.

Fresh landslides were reported from Mongpong on Sevok Road in Jalpaiguri district which affected traffic to other north Bengal districts and Assam.
