Sexual harassment case can't be cancelled over compromise between accused and complainant: Supreme Court

New Delhi/IBNS: The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled a sexual harassment case can't be cancelled due to a "compromise" reached by the accused and the complainant, media reports said.

The top court ruled quashing an order passed by the Rajasthan High Court, which relieved a teacher, named Vimal Kumar Gupta, who was accused of sexually harassing a minor girl student in Rajasthan's Gangapur.

The case dates back to 2022.

The High Court had relieved Gupta after he produced a statement from the minor's parents on a stamp paper.

The parents had reportedly claimed they had registered a police complaint out of misunderstanding and refrained from any action against the teacher.

Police had accepted the statement. Though a lower court rejected the statement, the High Court relieved Gupta and ordered the cancellation of the First Information Report.

Ramji Lal Bairwa, a social worker, moved the Supreme Court to challenge the High Court order.

A Supreme Court bench comprising Justices CT Ravikumar and PV Sanjay Kumar has ordered a prosecution.
