Kolkata, Mar 2 (IBNS): The Kolkata Police on Thursday arrested five suspects from city's Kidderpore area and recovered fake Rs. 2000 notes with a face value of 56 lakh 74 thousand rupees from their possessions, officials said.

According to reports, five men went to buy smartphones at a mobile store at Fancy Market under Watgunge Police Station limits in west part of the city on Thursday morning and when they were paying bills in new notes, shopkeeper doubted the authenticity of their currencies and informed the police.

Police force from local Watgunge PS and anti-rowdy squad of city police's detective department rushed to the spot and detained the men.

"We have arrested five persons- Manwar Mullah alias Ujjwal, Sheikh Ekhlash Ahmed, Sheikh Abul Kalam Azad alias Suraj and Syed Rehan of neighbouring Howrah district and Balai Mondal alias Joy from Bankura district of West Bengal- and seized 56.74 lakh rupees in new Rs. 2000 notes from their possessions," Joint CP (Crime) of Kolkata Police, Vishal Garg, told IBNS.

"We will be sending these fake notes to RBI's currency printing press in West Medinipur's Salboni to examine those quality," Garg said.

Meanwhile, police also spotted State Bank of India (SBI)'s stickers on the packets, inside which those notes were packed.

However, five arrested will be produced to a local court in Kolkata on Friday.

"We are interrogating these five youths to know if they are associated with any international racket," the senior IPS officer said.
