Rapid relief: India gifts Nepal a ready-to-deploy 70-metre bridge to reconnect flood-hit region

The Ambassador of India to Nepal on Thursday handed over a complete set of a 70-metre modular bridge, along with specialised launching equipment, to Nepal’s Minister of Physical Infrastructure and Transport during a ceremony held in Hetauda.

According to a statement issued by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, the Government of India has committed to supplying a total of ten modular bridges of 70 metres or more, following a request from the Government of Nepal after the devastating rains of October 2025 that severely impacted eastern Nepal. The bridges, valued at over NPR 73 crore, are being provided on a grant basis.

The newly handed-over modular bridge will be transported immediately to Ramechhap, where road connectivity remains disrupted due to the October 2025 heavy rainfall.

This assistance follows similar support extended last year. In the aftermath of the September 2024 floods and landslides, India supplied 10 prefabricated steel bridges worth NPR 41 crore, of which four have already been installed, the Embassy said.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Ambassador said the delivery of the modular bridge and launching tools underscores the “enduring bonds of friendship” between India and Nepal and reaffirms India’s commitment to supporting Nepal’s infrastructure development and post-disaster reconstruction.

Nepal’s Minister of Physical Infrastructure and Transport expressed appreciation for India’s continued support, noting that the quick-assembly design of the bridges and the provision of launching tools are vital for accelerating emergency reconstruction. The Minister added that the bridge would be operationalised at the earliest.
