New Delhi, Apr 10 (IBNS): India, on Monday, observed the 100 years of Champaran Satyagraha initiated by Mahatma Gandhi on April 10, 1917, in a small village in Bihar.

Mahatma Gandhi had initiated the Satyagraha or the non-violent disobedience in Champaran to empower the poor peasants against the forced cultivation of indigo by the British. He urged the people to clean up villages and build hospitals and schools, and to do away with social evils such as untouchability.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the centenary celebration of the Champaran Satyagraha is a good opportunity to boost India's future.

He tweeted, "A century ago, Indians became Satyagrahis & fought colonialism. Today, let us become Swachhagrahis & create a Swachh Bharat, #MyCleanIndia."

The Publications Division of the Central Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in collaboration with National Gandhi Musuem, on Monday, unveiled a Heritage book titled  'Gandhi in Champaran' as part of the centenary celebration.

The book was released by Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, M Venkaiah Naidu. Two other books on Mahatma Gandhi was also released.

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will join a special programme, 'Swachhagraha - Bapu Ko Karyanjali' to mark 100 years of the historic Champaran Satyagraha.

"There will be an exhibition showcasing Champaran Satyagraha & it will connect essential principles of Satyagraha with Swachhagraha," tweeted the PM.
