New Delhi/Chennai, Nov 23 (IBNS Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday ordered immediate release of Rs 940 Crore central assistance after Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa sought Rs 2000 Crore as relief for areas affected by heavy rains and floods in the state, reports said.

Vast areas of Tamil Nadu were pounded by heavy rains earlier this month that cause massive inundation and destruction of property in the  four Northern coastal districts of Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, Chennai and Tiruvallur. About four lakh people have been rendered homeless due to the floods.

Jayalalithaa wrote a letter to PM Modi, who is currently in Malaysia, asking for relief and restoration assistance from the National Disaster Response Fund and other Central funds.
