PM Modi launches Clean India campaign

New Delhi, Oct 2 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' in New Delhi.

He urged people to invite nine persons to take up the cleaning drive.

Modi said he has urged several people including cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, Bollywood superstars Salman Khan and Priyanka Chopra, yoga guru Baba Ramdev to start the initiative.

"I have invited 9 people and asked them to come to public places and work towards a Clean India. I ask them to invite 9 more people too," Modi said.

Modi said: "I have invited Mridula Sinha ji, I have invited Sachin Tendulkar, Baba Ramdev, ShashiTharoor, Kamal Haasan, Priyanka Chopra, SalmanKhan, team of Tarak Mehta Ka Oolta Chashma for taking up the initiative."

The Prime Minister has invited businessman Anil Ambani among the nine people to join the movement to Clean India

Modi started the campaign on the day of 'Gandhi Jayanti' when the country observes the birth anniversary of the 'Father of the Nation' Mahatma Gandhi.

"We shoul;d give back something to Gandhiji," he said.

Modi asked people who have assembled at the venue: "We reached Mars. No PM or Minister went. It was the people who did it, our scientists who did it. So can't we create (a Clean India)."

Modi was seen symbolically wielding the broom as he launched  the campaign.
