New Delhi, July 26 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed the Indian soldiers on the 19th Kargil Diwas, which marks the victory of the country against Pakistan in the Kargil war, which took place in 1999.

In a tweet, Modi said: "On #KargilVijayDiwas, a grateful nation pays homage to all those who served the nation during Operation Vijay. Our brave soldiers ensured that India remains protected and gave a befitting answer to those who tried to vitiate the atmosphere of peace."

The conflict started when several Pakistani soldiers and militants captured the Indian territory along the Line of Control (LoC).

Based on information from locals, the Indian Army had launched an offensive under the name "Operation Vijay".

According to several reports, then Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif was unaware about the plans of the war.

In many reports, it was stated that only former Pakistani PM and then Army Chief, Pervez Musharraf, made the blueprint of the war.

Later, rebuffing the news, Musharaff had said that he had stated the same to Sharif earlier.

On July 26, 1999, the Indian Army officially declared that the Kargil mission was successful.
