New Delhi, Sept 12 (IBNS): The Indian Air Force on Monday said it lunched an evacuation operation for rescue of passengers involved in a road accident ahead of Pang on a Manali-Leh highway on Sunday.

"An emergency rescue message was received by IAF of an accident involving a Tempo Traveller which was reported to have fallen down the track into a valley ahead of Pang on Manali-Leh highway," read a government statement.

Approximately 16 passengers were on board.

The travelers had crashed into a gorge leading to high death toll and six passengers had succumbed to the injuries.

The remaining ten passengers were reported to be critically injured and needed immediate evacuation.

Six of the ten casualties could be moved by road and remaining four were declared as critical, and needed immediate air evacuation.

The IAF launched four helicopters of 114 HU (The Siachen Pioneers) based at Leh for the mission.

The casualties were critically injured with multiple fractures, bruises and head injuries and it was a difficult task to emplane the casualties.

The mission, however, was accomplished and the injured travelers were rescued to safety thereby containing the number of casualties.
