Kolkata, Sep 2 (IBNS): More than 40 passengers of a public bus narrowly escaped death after it was stranded on a submerged road in northern Kolkata on Friday late evening, reports said.

According to reports, a privately-owned bus (Route no. 3C/1) was  trapped in the  waterlogged Patipukur underpass in Kolkata's South Dumdum area at around 6 pm. and almost half of the bus was submerged by the water.

Locals rushed to the scene and rescued all passengers from the bus safely.

"The driver of our bus tried to cross the waterlogged underpass at the highest speed. I guess, he did not have any idea about the depth of water," Sumit Sanyal, a passenger of the submerged bus, told IBNS.

"Soon engine of the bus stopped working and it was stranded on the fully submerged street. The water was so high, half of the bus was filled with water," Sanyal added.

Later, police, fire and emergency services officials and Disaster Management Group (DMG) personnel reached the spot and recovered the trapped bus from Patipukur underpass.

"A major disaster was evaded yesterday. No casualty was reported in the incident," a local police official confirmed.

"Few passengers got minor injuries during evacuation. They were taken to a local hospital and all released after first-aid," the official told IBNS.

A massive downpour (90-104 mm) lashed Kolkata and its adjoining areas on Friday evening, leaving city roads waterlogged and stalling traffic at several locations for hours.
