New Delhi/Dehradun/UNI: Environmentalist and ‘Chipko’ movement pioneer Sunderlal Bahuguna passed away on Friday due to Covid-19. He was 94.

He had been in serious condition since last night after his oxygen level dropped critically and breathed his last at 1205 hrs, according to the hospital sources.

Bahuguna, an eco-activist, made the Chipko movement in the 1970s a movement of the masses.

He spent his life persuading and educating the villagers to protest against the destruction of the forests and Himalayan mountains.

He was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 2009.
