Islamabad, July 13 (IBNS): Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam will return to Pakistan on Friday where they are likely to be arrested by officials for being convicted by a court in the South Asian nation in a corruption case last week.

In a major blow to Nawaz Sharif ahead of the general elections, a Pakistani court last Friday handed over the former PM of the country a 10-year jail term over his family’s purchase of upscale London flats.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) court declared the verdict after several delays. Apart from Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif received a seven-year sentence.

Former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif, along with his daughter, Maryam, commenced his journey from the city's Heathrow Airport late Thursday night back to his motherland, Geo News reported.

Maryam, who is also a political figure in Pakistan, earlier tweeted: "Told my kids to be brave in the face of oppression. But kids will still be kids. Goodbyes are hard, even for the grownups."

She shared an image with the post where she could be seen hugging her children.

The former PM's son-in-law Safdar Awan was given a one-year sentence by the court.

Apart from the jail term, Nawaz has been handed a fine of eight million pounds.

The court has handed over 2m pounds fine by the court.
