Navjot Singh Sidhu joins Congress, says homecoming

New Delhi, Jan 16 (IBNS) : Cricketer-turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday formally joined the Congress ahead of Punjab election next month and declared that it was his "ghar wapsi" (Homecoming), media reports said.

Sidhu joining the Congress ended months of negotiations after he quit the BJP in September.

"This is my ghar wapsi," Sidhu said while addressing a press conference. He claimed that he is a "born Congressman."

Replying a question, Sidhu said he won't have problems in working with Congress' Chief Ministerial candidate Amarinder Singh, who was stated to be reluctant in taking the former India cricketer in the party, but had to comply with the wishes of the high command.

"If Lalu (Yadav) and Nitish (Kumar) can come together, why can't Amarinder Singh and I?", Sidhu said in his usual jest.

"This is a fight for Punjab's self-respect," he said.

"Navjot Singh Sidhu's fight is for the redemption of Punjab. I can't see the youth dying slowly," he said, referring to the  state's  drug problem.

Sidhu met Rahul Gandhi on Sunday.  He also tweeted his photo with the Congress Vice-President.
