Patna, Sep 1 (IBNS): The ancient Nalanda University (NU) began classes on Monday at its newly set up campus at Rajgir, reports said.

The new Rajgir campus opened classes for the School of Ecology and Environmental Studies and the School of Historical Studies with at least 15 students and 11 faculty members initially.

The classes began at around 9 am on Monday. The three-day orientation programme for the students was completed on Sunday.

The NU campus will be spread over 455 acres and the construction is still underway around 12 km far from the actual site, sources said.

Nalanda University was founded during the Gupta period in 6th century AD and came to an end after being destroyed in 1193 AD by the invading Turk army led by Bakhtiyar Khilji.
