MK Alagiri in U-turn says he will accept brother Stalin as boss if DMK takes him back

Chennai, Aug 30 (IBNS):  Turning a political somersault, expelled DMK leader and son of late M Karunanidhi, MK Alagiri, on Thursday said he would accept his younger brother MK Stalin as his leader if he was taken back in the party fold from where he was driven out in 2014.

Alagiri, now 67, told media persons that he was ready to join the DMK. "It is obvious that I accept him [Stalin)] as my leader.I will accept his leadership if I am accepted back.'

The former union minister's younger brother Stalin, 65, on Tuesday, took over as the Dravida Munnetra Kazghagam (DMK) president.

In less than a week after DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi's death,  MK Alagiri had dared Stalin for party leadership. The feud between the siblings over the succession of the legacy of Karunanidhi is not very new.

Speaking to reporters at his father’s memorial at Marina Beach in Chennai, Alagiri had said, "I expressed my pain to my father. I can't say what it is now. All the true and loyal supporters of Thalaivar, Kalaignar are with me, they are supporting me. Only time will give a befitting reply."

The DMK president's post had fallen vacant after party patriarch Karunanidhi's demise on Aug 7, 2018.

Stalin had become the working president of the party in 2017.

Following Karunanidhi's death, a succession war within the party took place with Alagiri, claiming several party loyalists are with him.

Alagiri was expelled from the DMK in 2014 for "anti-party activities".
