Mehul Choksi granted bail in Dominica, can now travel to Antigua for medical treatment

New Delhi/IBNS: Fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi, arrested and jailed in the Caribbean island nation of Dominica since May 23 for illegal entry, was granted bail by a court there on medical grounds, media reports said on Monday.

He has been now given an allowance to travel to neighbouring Antigua and Barbuda, of which he is a citizen.

The high court in Dominica has approved for Choksi to travel to Antigua to seek medical attention from a specialised neurologist there, his counsel informed the media on Monday.

The 62-year-old went missing in the Caribbean island nation of Antigua and Barbuda earlier in May.

Choksi, who is wanted by India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED), fled to Antigua and Barbuda in 2018.

He was arrested in Dominica while he was trying to enter the Carribian country illegally.

Earlier, India had said that it will use its diplomatic channels to bring back fugitive Choksi directly from Dominica after he was captured there.

The entire episode of Choksi's disappearance and capture in Dominica came amid efforts to extradite him by the CBI and the ED, which are investigating the Rs. 14,000 crore fraud at India's second-largest state-owned bank.

Choksi's brother-in-law Nirav Modi, a diamond czar, is also accused in the same case.
