Guwahati, April 2 (IBNS): Meghalaya police recovered a huge cache of arms  -- allegedly belonging to banned outfit Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) -- on Sunday evening, reports said.

The arms were found buried in the forest area in Durama hills in East Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, according to local reports.

This is the second recovery within a week in East Garo Hills district.

Based on intelligence input, Meghalaya police visited the site with metal detectors to scout the ground at Dorengkigre area.

The team recovered 21 pistols, magazines, two walkie-talkie sets, lethal arrow heads, GNLA seals and documents.

East Garo Hills district Superintendent of Police, R TG Momin, said that the recovered arms were left behind by slain GNLA chief, Sohan D Shira, who was killed in an encounter with security forces on February 25 last.

The Dorengkigre area is known as a stronghold of the banned militant group.
