Mallikarjun Kharge vs Shashi Tharoor: Congress party to vote to elect new president today

| @indiablooms | Oct 17, 2022, at 02:25 pm

New Delhi: The Congress party will vote to elect a new President on Monday as two senior leaders- Mallikarjun Kharge and Shashi Tharoor- are contesting for the top post.

The election of the president is crucial as the Congress is attempting to revive itself ahead of several state polls and the important 2024 national elections.

More than 9,000 delegates are likely to cast their votes to elect the new President of the grand old party of the country which had also played a crucial role in the Indian Independence movement.

This is going to be the first time in several years that the party will have a non-Gandhi president.

Kharge, said to be the pick of the Gandhi family, had top Congress leaders like A K Antony, Ashok Gehlot, Ambika Soni, Mukul Wasnik, Anand Sharma, Ajay Maken, Bhupinder Hooda, Digvijay Singh, Salman Khurshid and Manish Tewari among a number of leaders as proposers.

Counting will be held on October 19 and results will be declared.
