Major fire guts Howrah court's record room

Kolkata, Jun 13 (IBNS): A massive fire broke out at a district civil, criminal and sessions court in Kolkata's twin city Howrah on Tuesday morning, reports said.

According to reports, the fire was first noticed at around 10:45 am. on the first floor of Old Collectorate Building at the court premise.

As many as 10 fire tender engines, Disaster Management Group (DMG) personnel and local police rushed to the scene and firemen fought for hours to douse the massive blaze.

Later, Howrah City Police's commissioner D.P. Singh and Howrah's District Magistrate Chaitali Chakraborty visited the scene.

Local police confirmed that none was hurt in the incident while a large number of important documents were gutted due to the major fire at the record room.

After preliminary investigation, fire and emergency services officials said that the fire might have started due to a short circuit.

"After completing probe, we can announce the exact reason behind the fire," the official told IBNS.

Due to the blaze and firefighting and rescue operations, traffic on nearby roads and Howrah Bridge (Rabindra Setu) was disrupted for hours.
