Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray to meet PM Modi today, to discuss Maratha reservation

New Delhi/IBNS: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will hold a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss a number of issues including the Maratha reservation, media reports said.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and other officials will also be present in the meeting.

Among other issues, which are likely to be discussed, are Other Backward Class (OBC) reservation, financial aid for cyclone Tauktae relief measures and GST refund.

In May this year, Thackeray, who heads a coalition government in his state, had written a letter to the Prime Minister requesting him for the reservation of Marathas in jobs and education by including them in the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC).

His request had followed a crucial Supreme Court judgement which struck down the reservation calling it "unconstitutional".

The five-judge bench had stated the reservation, which was allowed in 2018, had pushed the reservation beyond 50 per cent.

The reservation for Marathas was brought by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis-led government, which was led by Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Thackeray's Shiv Sena.

The Maratha is a Marathi caste which is subdivided into 96 clans.

According to historian B.R. Sunthankar, Marathas are a "middle-peasantry" caste which formed the bulk of the Maharashtrian society along with other peasant castes.
