Kolkata: Again subsidence noticed on Tollygunge-Karunamoyee Bridge

Kolkata, Sep 27 (IBNS): Four days after the repair of a subsidence on Karunamoyee Bridge in southern Kolkata's Tollygunge area, again a small portion of the bridge caved in at the same point on Thursday evening, reports said.

After spotting the subsidence on the bridge's Tollygunge to Haridevpur flank, city traffic police covered the crack with an iron plate and cordoned off the area with guardrails to control traffic movement.

Officials of Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), which is responsible for maintaining the bridge over Tolly canal, said that its engineers will examine the crack on Friday.

Earlier on Sep 22, weeks after the Majerhat bridge disaster, a portion in an expansion joint on the bridge caved in, triggering panic among the locals.

After inspecting the scene, state Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Firhad Bobby Hakim and officials from KMDA, and state Public Works Department (PWD) stated the bridge was safe to carry vehicles and KMDA engineers repaired the portion.

Four days after the maintenance work was done, another subsidence at the same point on the bridge has sparked scare among the locals and commuters.

Since the rail over bridge in southwest Kolkata's Majerhat collapsed, Tollygunge-Karunamoyee Bridge has become one of the most important links between Behala and rest parts of Kolkata, resulting an increased pressure of traffic on it.
