Kenya university attack toll rises to 147, India condemns
Nairobi, Apr 3 (IBNS): The death toll in early Thursday's attack on the Garissa University campus in north-eastern Kenya rose to 147 even as troopers of the country cleared the area taken over by the Islamist al-Shabab terrorists, officials said.
The Somalia-based outfit attacked the campus after dawn on Thursday and later took refuge in a dormitory with hostages.
While mostly students were killed, about 79 were injured. Over 500 were rescued though from the clutches of the terrorists.
Four terrorists were also killed after Kenyan troops launched a counter assault on the final building where the insurgents had holed up for over 12 hours.
An overnight curfew has been issued in parts of the country.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called the terror attack on a university campus in Kenya killing nearly 147, as horrific and distressing.
"Terror attack in Kenya is horrific. It is most distressing that a university campus was attacked in this manner. Utterly condemnable," he tweeted.
India has strongly condemned the barbaric terrorist attack on the university campus at Garissa in north-eastern Kenya on Thursday, in which about 147 people, mostly students, were killed by Islamist militants.
"We stand in solidarity and sympathy with the bereaved families and the injured, and convey our heart-felt condolences to the Government and people of Kenya," said India in a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs.
"This outrageous terrorist act is yet another reminder that the menace of terrorism continues to threaten us all and the international community needs to further strengthen its fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations," it said.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the head of the United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization have strongly condemned the terrorist attack, with both officials expressing solidarity with the Kenyan people and urging swift justice for those responsible for the deadly attack.
