Srinagar, Aug 20 (IBNS): An Indian man from the state of Jammu and Kahmir, who went missing in the United Arab Emirates, has been deported from the Gulf nation and handed over to the police for being an Islamic State sympathiser, ever as his family claimed innocence.

Identified as Irfan Zargar, 36, he is a resident of Bemina in Srinagar, who was expelled from Dubai on Aug 14.

He reportedly worked with a telecom company in the Gulf and moved there in 2014.

Speaking about her son's arrest, Irfan's mother was quoted as saying by Tribune India: "We received Irfan’s call from Jammu this morning. He said he has been handed over to the J&K Police. His elder brother immediately left for Jammu."

According to reports, he went missing in Dubai in April. His case was taken up by Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who had directed her officials to help find the man.

"After about a month his brother went to Dubai and after a lot of delay, the Sharjah police station registered a missing report," Tribune quoted as police as saying.

Irfan, who was also jailed in Dubai, called up his family in Srinagar and said that he was confined at an unknown place. However, security sources said that he was detained due to his suspicious social media activity, which included sharing pro Islamic videos.

"He was subjected to intensive questioning for his appreciation of the Islamic State activities in Syria and Iraq,"security sources told the outlet.

Upon his return to India, the National Investigation Agency officials quizzed him. Irfan is likely to be released as nothing substantial has been found against him.
