Kashmir : Locals clash security forces as cordon and search operation goes on

| | May 17, 2017, at 05:25 pm
Srinagar, May 17 (IBNS) : Violent clashes erupted in Shopian in south Kashmir on Wednesday morning after security forces, looking for militants, launched a cordon and search operation in the Heff-Shirmal and Achan village areas.

The operation was conducted  jointly by the Army and police following inputs about few militants  hiding in the area.

The locals reportedly raised pro-freedom slogans and pelted stones at the security forces in an effort to disrupt the operation.

The security forces retaliated by lobbing teargas shells.

The clashes were going on when the last reports came in.

This is not the first time the security forces have come under attack from locals at the time of  the hunt for militants.

Army chief General Bipin Rawat and Defence minister Arun Jaitley will be in Srinagar on Wednesday  to  review the security situation.
