Kashmir celebrates R-Day in absence of ministers

| | Jan 26, 2017, at 08:17 pm
Srinagar, Jan 26 (IBNS): Amid tight security, the main Republic day function passed off peacefully here and other parts of the Kashmir Valley on Thursday, official said.

It was first time when Indian tricolour was unfurled by administrative officers and not the ministers in most of the districts of Kashmir Valley on Thursday.

No ministers could take part in the celebrations in the Valley due to closure of surface and air traffic for the last three days.

Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Basheer Khan hoisted the tricolour and took salute at Bakshi Stadium here amid tight security.

Contingents of police, paramilitary and school children marched inside the stadium covered with thick blanket of snow.

Senior civil, police and army officials attended the function as sharp shooters perched atop buildings around the stadium kept a tight vigil.

Similarly, it will be Deputy Commissioners who will unfurl the Indian flag in most of the districts on Thursday.
