Judge to pronounce sentence on Ram Rahim Rape Case today

Rohtak, Aug 28 (IBNS): Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who was convicted for raping his two Sadhvis (female followers), will be sentenced on Monday afternoon as the city has been locked down to avoid any untoward incident.

The judge will pronounce the sentence at 2.30 pm.

Ram Rahim was convicted by the CBI court on Friday in a rape case that dates back to 2002. Following the verdict, Panchkula and Sirsa witnessed riots by the Ram Rahim followers who gathered there to showcase support for the Dera chief leading to 30 odd deaths.

His followers went on a rampage as they attacked police, journalists and even destroyed vehicles.

Several OB vans were also damaged by the attackers.

In order to gain control over the incident, the army was called in to Panchkula, on the outskirts of Chandigarh.

Before that, the police used tear gas and water cannons to try and disperse mobs of Ram Rahim supporters.

However, their efforts went in vain as they were outnumbered near the courthouse.

Ram Rahim is presently in Rohtak jail where the judge will be flown to pronounce the sentence.

The area around the Rohak jail has been cordoned off.

The schools and colleges are called off for the day.

After the conviction on Friday, controversy erupted as several news channels aired the footage to claim that Ram Rahim was treated as a VIP and was also not seen wearing the prison clothes.
