Jayalalithaa very critical, on life support, says hospital

Chennai, Dec 5 (IBNS) : Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa is stated to be "very critical" and has been on cardiac and respiratory support even after undergoing a heart surgery on Monday morning, reports said.

A statement issued by Apollo Hospitals around noon said, she “continues to be very critical and is on ECMO (Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation)

and other life support systems.”

"Amma" supporters arrange special poojas at Sakthi Vinayagar Temple in Mumbai’s Dharavi for her speedy recovery.

Reports said security has been strengthened in Tamil Nadu following the development and the Centre has been in constant touch with the state Government.

In Delhi, Union Minister of state for Home Affiars Kiten Rijiju said the Centre would send more forces to Tamil Nadu, if needed, to help maintain law and order situation.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkiah Naidu is scheduled to fly down to Chennai to visit Jayalalithaa.

The 68-year-old AIADMK supremo had undergone a a heart surgery on Monday morning following a cardiac arrest.

"There was an angio procedure this morning. Doctors say don't worry, Amma will be fine,"  party spokesperson CR Saraswathi had said earlier, adding, "we are telling cadres don't worry. God is with Amma, she will come back. Definitely she will be ok." 

Jayalalithaa had a cardiac arrest on Sunday evening and was put on an extracorporeal membrane heart assist device, a life support system that aids heart and lung functioning.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda said a team of four top doctors from Delhi's prestigious AIIMS has been sent to Chennai on the request of Apollo Hospital, where Jayalalithaa  has been since September 22.
