New Delhi: The government on Friday appointed IPS officer Pravin Madhukar Pawar as the Joint Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a duration of five years, starting from the date he assumes office, or until further instructions, whichever comes first, an official notification said.

"The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Department of Personnel & Training for Induction of Shrl PrayIn Madhukar Pawar, IPS (KTK:2003) to the post of Joint Director, CBI for a period of five years from the date of assumption of charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier," the official statement read.

In May of this year, the government appointed Praveen Sood, the current Director General of Police (DGP) of Karnataka, as the next head of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a two-year term.

Sood assumed the position after the completion of Subodh Kumar Jaiswal's tenure as the CBI chief on May 25.

According to the established guidelines, the CBI director is chosen for a fixed term of two years by a panel consisting of the prime minister, Chief Justice of India (CJI), and the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha.

The appointment can be extended for a maximum of five years.
