India re-elected to UNHRC

New York, Oct 21 (IBNS) India was re-elected to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Tuesday.

After receiving  significant number of votes in the  Asia-Pacific group, the country has been elected for the period of 2015-17.

India's first term in the international body is due to end on Dec 31 this year.

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in a statement said PM Narendra Modi has expressed joy on India being re-elected to UNHRC. India emerged on top among the Asian group and has been re-elected to UNHRC.

MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin tweeted: "India tops Asian group and is re-elected to UN Human Rights Council. India -162 votes; Indonesia -152; Bangladesh -149; Qatar -142 elected."
