Illegal sand mining case: Akhilesh Yadav under CBI scanner
New Delhi, Jan 5 (IBNS): On a day when reports suggesting a possible tie-up between the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) emerged, former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has come under the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) scanner over an illegal sand mining case, media reports said.
According to the CBI First Information Report (FIR), which was made public on Saturday, Akhilesh may be probed in connection with the case.
On Saturday, the agency carried out raids at 14 locations.
The FIR has names of 11 people including IAS officer B Chandrakala, SP MLC Ramesh Kumar Mishra and Sanjay Dixit.
Akhilesh held the mining portfolio from 2012-2013. He was succeeded by Gayatri Prajapati, who was arrested in 2017 for allegedly raping a woman in Chitrakoot.
This is the third FIR registered, more than two years after the probe was directed by the Allahabad High Court.
Several media reports claimed Akhilesh and Mayawati, chiefs of SP and BSP respectively, met on Friday to discuss alliance in Uttar Pradesh to dethrone the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from power at the Centre. However, the two leaders are likely to keep the Congress out of the alliance.
SP spokesperson Abdul Hafiz Gandhi said the timing of the raids raise questions about the intentions.
Earlier, several opposition leaders have accused the BJP of using investigating agencies as a political tool.
