Heir of Brindavan Gardens' creator expresses disappointment over Karnataka govt's Disneyland plan

Bangalore/London, July 31 (IBNS): Alyia Phelps Gardiner Krumbiegel, the great granddaughter of German Horticultural legend Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel, who had designed the iconic Brindavan Gardens at the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) Dam, has expressed her disappointment over the Karnataka government's decision to revamp the iconic garden on the lines of popular theme park Disneyland.

According to reports, Gardiner Krumbiegel has written a letter to Karnataka chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy urging him to drop the plan.

The entire development happened after the CM had proposed in the state budget to revamp the Brindavan Gardens on the lines of Disneyland.

So far, Rs. 5 crore has been allocated for the project, reports said.

“The Brindavan Gardens is of international value and must be treated following the guidelines of the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS),” she was quoted as saying in the letter as reported by The Hindu.

She also highlighted the heritage value of the park in her letter.

"It is also about the very spirit of the place that just has to be preserved; the so called 'genius loci' Disneyland would put the whole idea, the concept of a representative garden, 'ad absurdum'– a total neglect of history," she wrote in the letter.

Speaking to Star of Mysore from her home in London, Gardiner Krumbiegel said that she was disappointed to read about the Karnataka government’s plans to transform Brindavan Gardens as Disneyland to attract more tourists.
