From Gujarat CM to PM: Modi’s historic 8,931-day journey sets this new record

| @indiablooms | Mar 22, 2026, at 08:01 pm

PM Narendra Modi on Sunday completed 8,931 days in office, becoming the country’s longest-serving head of an elected government.

He surpassed Pawan Kumar Chamling, who had held the record with a tenure of 8,930 days as Chief Minister of Sikkim.

Modi’s milestone includes his combined tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat and as Prime Minister of India.

In his political career, he has also achieved several key milestones, including becoming the first Prime Minister born in independent India and the first non-Congress leader to return to power for three consecutive terms — 2014, 2019, and 2024.

Modi was sworn in as Chief Minister of Gujarat on October 7, 2001, and served for over 13 years until May 21, 2014.

Following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s landmark victory in the Lok Sabha elections, he took oath as India’s 14th Prime Minister on May 26, 2014.

He became the first non-Congress leader to secure a full majority in the Lok Sabha and later the first to complete two consecutive terms before returning for a third.

Congratulating him on the achievement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah wrote on X: “A milestone rooted in service, hard work and unwavering commitment. Today, PM Narendra Modi surpasses the 8,930-day record of former Sikkim CM Pawan Kumar Chamling, becoming the longest-serving head of a government in India.”

He added that Modi’s 8,931 days in public life reflect “a deep dedication to nation-first governance, integrity in action, and tireless service to every citizen,” calling it “a rare legacy built on unprecedented trust and unparalleled seva.”
