Lucknow/IBNS: Former bureaucrat AK Sharma, who was among the close aides to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been made the Vice President of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttar Pradesh.

The Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh are due to be held next year.

For weeks, there had been speculation that Sharma, who was a member of the legislative council in Uttar Pradesh and a former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, could get a ministerial portfolio in UP.

Earlier this year, he was entrusted with the role of overseeing combat action against Covid-19 in PM Modi's Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi.

Sharma's hometown is the eastern UP district of Mau.

"Thanks to the national and state leadership for making me vice president of Uttar Pradesh BJP. Under the guidance of seniors, I will be in service of the society, state and country with the help of my friends," Sharma tweeted after the announcement.
