Doordarshan: Indian national broadcaster turns 57

New Delhi, Sep 15 (IBNS): Doordarshan, India's national broadcaster and now part of Prasar Bharati, turned 57 on Thursday with celebrations pan-India celebrations at all offices of the channel on Thursday.

Union Minister for Urban Development, Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation, Information & Broadcasting M Venkaiah Naidu also joined the Producers, Directors, Actors and Anchors of Doordarshan on its 57th foundation day.

The first Doordarshan transmission took place on Sep 15, 1959, with the help of a small transmitter from a makeshift studio, according to media reports.

Then it was part of All India Radio.

Regular transmissions began in 1965.

It was on Apr 1, 1974, that Doordarshan began functioning independent of AIR.
