CWC meeting begins to decide timeline for organisational polls

New Delhi, June 6 (IBNS): The Congress Working Committee (CWC), the top decision making body of the Congress party, began its meeting on Tuesday morning with the likelihood of the party coming up with an announcement of the formal schedule for organisational elections that may see the elevation of Vice President Rahul Gandhi, media reports said.

According to reports, the meeting being held after a gap of seven months that witnessed the party bite dust in a series of Assembly elections, is being chaired by party President Sonia Gandhi.

The last CWC meeting was held on November seven and it was chaired by Rahul Gandhi. His mother was absent as she was unwell.

The meeting reportedly expressed "strong sentiments" for Rahul Gandhi's elevation.

The meeting on Tuesday comes amid Congress trying to mobilise the opposition parties against the BJP-led NDA Government on several issues and discuss the possibility of putting up a common candidate in the upcoming Presidential election.

Sonia Gandhi, who took over the Congress helm in May 1998, is already the longest serving president of  the party.

Rahul Gandhi took over as Vice President, the number two position,  in January 2013.
