Shillong, June 2 (IBNS): Authorities on Saturday continued to impose curfew in some parts of  Meghalaya’s capital city Shillong following a clash between security forces and an irate mob on Thursday midnight.

The city reportedly witnessed night long violence.

During violence,  mob torched a shop, a house and damaged at least five vehicles, media reports said.

Speaking on the incident,  Superintendent of Police (City) Steve Rynjah told The Hindu: "But a rumour that a local person had died during the incident went viral on social media, following which scores of people marched to Sweeper’s Lane. We had to use tear gas to disperse the angry crowd and bring the situation under control."

According to reports, a bus conductor of the Shillong Public Transport Service was assaulted by miscreants at Them Aew Mawlong (Harijan’s lane) and after the incident, there was a stand-off between the bus drivers and residents of Punjabi Line.

The situation turned violent at Motphran and the adjoining areas in Shillong when a mob wanted to march towards Them Aew Mawlong but Meghalaya police and CRPF personnel tried to prevent it resulting in a clash.

A journalist and four other people were injured in the incident.

The mob remained in the  Motphran area till Friday morning, waiting for an opportunity to make its way to Them Aew Mawlong.

The East Khasi Hills District Administration imposed curfew in some parts of Shillong on Friday following the violent clash.

State Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had urged people to maintain peace in the state.

He had tweeted on Friday: "We are monitoring the law and order situation closely in #Shillong. Efforts are being made to bring normalcy in the affected areas. Request the citizens to maintain peace. @PMOIndia @rajnathsingh @KirenRijiju."
