CPI-M & Congress MLAs join TMC on martyrs' day stage

Kolkata, Jul 21 (IBNS): Weakening the Left-Congress alliance in West Bengal, two MLAs of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and Congress joined the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Thursday during the party's annual martyrs' day observation in Kolkata.
TMC's Secretary General Partha Chatterjee announced this from the stage erected at a busy intersection in central Kolkata.

"Dipali Biswas, CPI-M MLA from Malda's Gajol constituency, and Tusharkanti Bhattacharya, Congress MLA from Bankura's Bishnupur constituency, are present here and joining Trinamool Congress party today," Chatterjee said.

Meanwhile, 14 opposition councillors of three municipalities also joined the ruling party on Thursday.

"Seven Congress councillors, including the vice chairman, of North Dinajpur's Kaliaganj Municipality, West Midnapur's Khargapur Municipality's five councillors and Purulia Municipality's two councillors are joining our party. Getting majority (9 out of total 10 seats), we are taking possession of Kaliaganj Municipality," Chatterjee further said.

Amidst a foolproof security, TMC is observing martyrs' day in thecity's downtown Esplanade area with a huge crowd flocking the venue.

Currently, principal speaker of the rally, TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is delivering her speech.

On July 21 in 1993, as many as 13 activists of Youth Congress were shot dead in Kolkata's Esplanade area during a clash with police. Since the formation of TMC, the party has been commemorating the day as martyr day every year.
