Cop injured as protest turns violent in Kolkata

Kolkata, Mar 11 (IBNS): The New Market area in Kolkata turned into a battle field as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers clashed with the police on Wednesday.

A police officer was injured when a brick hit his head , reports said.

Protesting against the failures of TMC ruled corporation board and several other issues, BJP traders called a rally towards Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) headquarters from College Square area on Wednesday afternoon.

When the police stopped them before the KMC office, the party workers started breaking barricades and threw bricks and stones to the police.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Devendra P Singh was injured and the police started to lathi charge to control the situation.

The police have arrested several BJP traders from the spot, reports said.

The BJP claimed that some party workers and general people were injured during the lathi charge.
