Congress demands Amit Shah apology for alleged derogatory remark on Mahatma Gandhi

New Delhi, Jun 10 (IBNS): Bharaitya Janata Party (BJP) chief Amit Shah and the Congress locked horns over Mahatma Gandhi on Saturday following Shah calling Gandhi a 'chatur baniya' according to media reports.

The BJP chief is in Chhattisgarh as part of his nationwide tour in preparation for the next round of elections in 2018 and 2019.

He made the remark in his address at Raipur on Friday, media reports said.

According to reports, Shah said that Mahatma Gandhi even contemplated dissolving the Congress post independence. Amit Shah called Congress a special purpose vehicle formed to secure freedom and being a clever "baniya" (meaning merchant) Gandhi knew the bleak future of Congress.

He said BJP was always clear that anyone who shouts anti-national slogan will be called an anti-national.

Meanwhile, the Congress had demanded an apology from the BJP chief for his remarks. Congress MLA Randeep S Surjewala has said that the BJP cheif must apologise for insulting Mahatma Gandhi, according to media reports.

The Congress also tweeted earlier: "Know the truth of BJP & its ideological master, RSS. While Congress leaders were fighting for freedom, RSS was siding with the British Raj."
