Centre reviews preparedness to tackle cyclone Nilofar
New Delhi, Oct 28 (IBNS): Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth on Tuesday reviewed the preparedness of Central and State Agencies to deal with the cyclone Nilofar which is expected to make landfall in Gujarat on Friday.
Cabinet Secretary chaired the meeting of the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) and closely reviewed the preparedness of central and state agencies to face any challenge arising out of the approaching cyclonic storm ‘Nilofar’ along the Gujarat coast.
In a video conferencing with the Chief Secretary and other senior officials of the State, he took stock of all the steps taken by the State Government to deal with the cyclone.
According to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officials, the cyclonic storm lay centred at 1,110 km south-west of Naliya, Gujarat.
IMD has estimated rainfall at most places along coastal districts of Saurashtra and Kutch from night of October 31.
IMD has suggested that fishermen out at sea along and off Gujarat coast should return to the coast.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is fully geared up for rescue operations.
NDRF has alerted its three Battalions situated at Vadodara (Gujarat), Pune (Maharashtra) and Bathinda (Punjab).
Seven rescue and relief teams are pre-positioned at Gandhidam, Dwarka, Porbandar, Veeraval, Rajkot and two teams at Bhuj in Gujarat.
NDRF teams are being deployed in vulnerable areas as proactive measures to mitigate the situation during cyclonic storm.
Apart from seven teams, nine more NDRF teams are on standby and awaiting deployment instructions.
Boats with other flood rescue equipment are being sent to meet any challenges which may arise due to cyclonic storm ‘Nilofar’.
