New Delhi, Apr 3 (IBNS): The CBI, on Monday, informed the Supreme Court that it is investigating former Finance Minister P Chidambaram's alleged role in the Aircel-Maxis deal, according to media reports.

P. Chidambaram, a senior Congress leader, was the finance minister in the previous Congress-led government at the centre.

It has been alleged that he gave the clearance for Malaysian firm Maxis to buy 100 percent of Aircel.

Tweeted Subramanian Swamy, a BJP MP and former Union Cabinet Minister, "Success in Aircel Maxis  in SC,  CBI files letter stating FIPB pC decision is being investigated. ED  files status report on Karti."

Swamy had filed a petition on the issue at the top court.

Accoding to media reports, Swamy claimed that Chidambaram illegally granted Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to the Rs 3500-crore Aircel-Maxis deal in 2006.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED), on MOnday, submitted a sealed envelope to the Supreme Court which contains the status report of the investigation into the controversial acquisition of Aircel by Maxis.

The next hearing is on May 2.
