Guwahati, Oct 12 (IBNS): At least six people were arrested by the police in Assam on Saturday in connection with the Burdwan blast of West Bengal, the investigation of which has now been taken over by the NIA (National Investigation Agency).

The police arrested three people from Nagaon district while the rest were arrested from Dhubri district of the state.

Earlier, the police had earlier arrested six people in connection with the case from  Barpeta district of the state. They were sent to 14-day police custody by the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrates Court

All are reportedly connected to a module operating under the patronage of Jamatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) which is allegedly involved in the blast that occurred in Burdwan on Oct 2.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday lodged a First Information Report (FIR) in the bomb blast case in Burdwan.

The decision was taken by the Home Ministry in view of international ramifications of the case as the incident is now being linked to terrorist groups from across the border having connections with al-Qaeda, LeT and HUJI.

The Burdwan blast incident had taken place at Khagragarh area in Burdwan district as the explosion in a house led to the discovery of a cache of arms and ammunition. Two people, identified as Shakil Ahmed and Swapan Mondal, died in the blast.
