Kolkata/IBNS: Lone Congress MLA in West Bengal, Bayron Biswas, who had created ripples in the state politics defeating the mighty Trinamool Congress in Sagardighi earlier this year, joined the ruling party on Monday.

Biswas, who had won in a bypoll with the support from Left, joined TMC during its national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee's mass outreach campaign Trinamoole Nabojowar Yatra.

Joining TMC, Biswas said, "I will be more committed to working for the benefit of the people now that I have joined Trinamool Congress. I was unable to discharge my duties while being in Congress."

After Biswas deserted Congress, the grand old party has apparently lost its representation once again in the state assembly, which is dominated by TMC and prime opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Apart from TMC and BJP, Indian Secular Front (ISF) has a lone MLA in the assembly.

Speaking on the Opposition unity in the backdrop of Biswas' desertion of Congress, Abhishek Banerjee said, "Mamata Banerjee was ready to support Congress in its direct fight with BJP.

"Congress wants TMC's support in Delhi but attempts to weaken TMC in Bengal favouring BJP. The two-way approach doesn't work."

The Sagardighi bypoll defeat had prompted West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee to lash out at Left and Congress alliance calling it "unholy" and accused the two parties of playing "communal card".

TMC's defeat in the minority-dominated Sagardighi had triggered a discussion whether the ruling party's votebank started to erode with a year left for the next General Elections.

However, Mamata Banerjee believed the minorities were with TMC, which stormed back to power in 2021 for the third consecutive term decimating the spirited BJP and turning both Left and Congress, which have ruled West Bengal for over 50 years in total since Independence, to zero.

Reacting to Biswas' switching of camps, Congress state president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said, "Mamata Banerjee is an expert in breaking other parties. We are aware of it. But I warn Didi (Mamata Banerjee) that the same trick will decimate her own party in future."

"Sagardighi result proved that Mamata Banerjee can be defeated and she is not invincible," the Congress MP added.
