‘Bengal freed from its chains’: PM Modi hails BJP govt’s early impact on ‘Paschimbanga Divas’
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hailed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) landmark victory in West Bengal, saying the new government led by Suvendu Adhikari had infused fresh energy into the state and accelerated efforts to overcome long-standing challenges.
Speaking at the ‘Paschimbanga Divas’ (West Bengal Day) celebrations in Tarakeswar of Hooghly district, Modi used his first public address since the BJP’s electoral triumph in the state to criticise the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Left, while asserting that Bengal had entered a new phase of development.
‘New freshness’ in Bengal
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said the political change in the state had brought a renewed sense of optimism among people.
“There is a new freshness in the air of Bengal. It feels as if Bengal has been freed from its chains,” he said.
Modi extended his greetings to the people of West Bengal on the occasion of West Bengal Day and said the election result had demonstrated the power of democratic participation.
He remarked that the transformation unfolding in the state showed how much difference a single vote and an election could make.
BJP govt working to address 'past shortcomings'
The Prime Minister said the new administration was moving swiftly to tackle problems that had accumulated over several decades.
“Work is progressing at a superfast pace to address the damage and shortcomings created by the Left and the TMC over decades in Bengal. As part of this effort, foundation stones have been laid for projects worth hundreds of crores of rupees,” he said.
According to Modi, the state government has prioritised development initiatives aimed at overcoming inherited challenges and improving infrastructure across West Bengal.
PM recalls Bengal’s historical struggles
During his address, Modi also reflected on Bengal’s historical significance and resilience.
He said the state had faced bloodshed and suffered the loss of many of its people over the years, but had preserved its identity and pride despite difficult circumstances.
The Prime Minister added that attempts to separate Bengal from India had ultimately failed, and stressed the importance of educating younger generations about that chapter of history.
Paschimbanga Divas and Syama Prasad Mukherjee
Emphasising the significance of West Bengal Day, Modi said the occasion commemorates the movement against efforts to merge Bengal with Pakistan during the Partition era.
“Today’s generation needs to be repeatedly made aware of the significance of Paschimbanga Divas, which marks the movement against attempts to merge Bengal with Pakistan," Modi said.
"When Congress capitulated, Syama Prasad Mukherjee started the movement,” he added.
