New Delhi, Aug 16 (IBNS):  Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who is undergoing treatment in New Delhi's AIIMS, is in a critical condition on life support system, said the hospital in a statement even as political leaders across India gather in the national capital.

AIIMS in its morning statement said, "Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's condition continues to remain the same. He is critical and on life support systems".

From top leaders of his party BJP to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, political bigwigs have started gathering in the national capital.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh visited him in the morning.

Vajpayee, 93, was admitted to the AIIMS with a kidney tract infection, urinary tract infection, low urine output and chest congestion.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday evening visited Vajpayee in the hospital.

According to reports, the Prime Minister spent about 50 minutes in the hospital.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is also flying to the national capital to visit the former Prime Minister, media reports said.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal are also expected in the hospital, said media reports.

He is under the supervision of Dr Randeep Guleria, the Director of AIIMS, who has been his personal physician for decades.

Vajpayee, whose first term as the Prime Minister lasted only 13 days in 1996, was the Prime Minister from 1998 to 2004.
