At least 35 killed, 43 injured in stampede in Shanghai

Hong Kong, Jan 1 (IBNS): At least 35 people were killed and 43 injured in a stampede during New Year’s Eve celebrations in Shanghai, media reports said.

The incident took place at around 11:35 pm local time in Chen Yi Square.

The exact cause of the stampede was unclear. The government said that the matter being investigated.

Reports said people in a nearby building began dropping green pieces of paper at around 11:50 pm that looked like US 100-dollar bills which set off a rush.

Photographs posted online showed the fake notes which bore the words “New Year 2015.”

The injured were taken to four hospitals. Top local officials like Shanghai Communist Party secretary Han Zheng and the mayor Yang Xiong also held meetings on Thursday morning and visited survivors at hospitals, sources said.
