Assam Rifles jawan killed, civilian injured in Manipur encounter
The encounter took place in the hilly area of Khunthak village in Ukhrul district.
A top official of Assam Rifles said that suspected militants attacked the Assam Rifles jawans when they were on a foot patroling in the remote area.
The troops retaliated but the militants managed to escape by taking advantage of the hilly terrain.
The jawan, who died in the attack, has been identified as Bhupal Singh.
A civilian was injured after getting caught in the crossfire.
The poll- bound state has faced an economic blockade imposed by the United Naga Council (UNC) since November 1.
On Wednesday, the Election Commission of India announced the assembly poll dates for five states, including Manipur.
