Guwahati, May 18 (IBNS): As the National Register of Citizens (NRC) updation process is underway in Assam to detect illegal foreigners, a Foreigners’ Tribunal (FT) in Assam has served notices to a BJP legislator from southern Assam’s Barak valley and members of his family asking them to prove their Indian citizenship before the tribunal.

According to the reports, the Foreigners’ Tribunal No 1 at Cachar has served a notice to BJP legislator of Borkhola assembly constituency Kishor Nath and six other members of his family including his wife and asking them to prove with documentary evidence that they are Indian citizens.

Apart from the BJP MLA, the tribunal has served similar notices to the BJP MLA’s wife Nilima Nath, his four brothers Matilal Nath, Pradip Nath, Jagdish Nath, Manik Nath and sister-in-law Rakhi Nath.

The BJP MLA and his family members will now have to appear before the tribunal in June next and have to prove that they are Indian citizens.

Reacting over the tribunal’s notice, Kishor Nath said that, he is a son of the soil and they have been living in Barak Valley for three generations.

“We will submit our all documentary evidence before the tribunal that we are Indian citizens. I am the elected MLA of Borkhola constituency. I am shocked after receiving the tribunal notice,” the BJP MLA said.

The BJP MLA alleged that, the previous Congress government had directed the government officials and targeted them to file such type of cases in weekly, monthly basis.
