1984 riots: Sajjan Kumar seeks 30 days to surrender
New Delhi, Dec 20 (IBNS): Found guilty in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case and sentenced to life imprisonment, Sajjan Kumar has sought 30 days from the Delhi High Court to surrender, media reports said.
The Delhi High Court on Monday convicted the 71-year-old former Congress leader and sentenced to jail "for the remainder of his natural life" in the 1984 anti-Sikh riot case, annulling his acquittal by a lower court earlier. The court is expected to hear his plea on Friday.
According to reports, Kumar has told the court the had three children and eight grandchildren and needed the time to settle matters related to his property.
“Sajjan Kumar has filed an application in Delhi High Court to give him a month to surrender. We will oppose that application tomorrow,” Hindustan Times quoted H.S. Phoolka, who is representing the 1984 riot victims in the case, as saying.
The court had given him till December 31 to surrender and fined him Rs 1 lakh. He is also not allowed to leave the national capital.
Following the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984, nationwide riots had broken out. In one incident five people were killed in the Delhi Cantonment area.
While Sajjan Kumar was earlier acquitted, five others were convicted in that case related to the riot.
A day after getting convicted in the 1984 anti-Sikh riot case, the Congress leader resigned from his party's primary membership on Tuesday, media reports said.
